Granny->Child, Swallow these tulsi(basil) leaves. They are good for our  health. Remember,not to chew them with your teeth. Just swallow them.
 .
Child->Why can’t I chew them with my teeth?
 .
Granny->Child, Don’t you know that Tulsi is the wife of Lord Vishnu. Therefore chewing the leaves will be a mark of disrespect.
 .
Child->(laughing)-Granny is really superstitious.

Friend, Do you know that most of our rituals and customs stand on firm scientific grounds.However, the actual logic behind these beliefs and traditions has been buried beneath the sands of ignorance and time. Unfortunately,we have tagged these beliefs as superstitions.
 .
It’s the time that we act logically.
So coming back to the point.
 .
Why should we swallow tulsi leaves and not chew them?
According to some scientists, Tusi leaves contain mercury in large amounts. And if raw mercury is applied to teeth, they may fall immediately.
(Though tulsi may not have an immediate effect.)
Some researchers opined that tulsi contains small amount of iron. Chewing it regularly may lead to tooth decolourisation(it may turn yellow).
Some botanists also say that tulsi contains slightly harmful acid and since the medium of our mouth is alkaline, it may cause tooth decay.
So whenever you come across such beliefs that may sound irrational…Dont just follow it blindly or tag it as a superstition…Take a halt and find the factual logic behind it.
